The Miniature Speaks: Understanding Symbolic Themes in sand and play
Dr. Julia Knach, LCPC, LCADC, RPT-S, RST C/T
About this training
Miniatures often communicate what children or adults cannot yet express through words. Whether chosen intentionally or intuitively, symbolic figures, objects, and landscapes reveal themes of attachment, identity, protection, loss, resilience, conflict, and hope. This training explores how clinicians can recognize recurring symbolic patterns within miniature play and sand tray experiences while remaining grounded in the child's unique developmental, cultural, and personal meaning-making. Participants will deepen their understanding of symbolic expression, learn to avoid overinterpretation, and discover practical ways to support children's stories through developmentally responsive play therapy interventions. Drawing from play therapy theory, attachment, interpersonal neurobiology, developmental psychology, symbolism, and trauma-informed practice, participants will learn how to ethically recognize symbolic themes and utilize play-based interventions that foster emotional expression, therapeutic insight, resilience, and narrative integration.
